Joey King To Star And Exec Produce Netflix’s Adaptation of ‘Uglies’ With McG Directing

EXCLUSIVE: Following the success of the romantic comedy The Kissing Booth, Netflix and Joey King have found their next project to collaborate on as King has signed to star in and exec produce an adaptation of Scott Westerfeld’s international bestseller dystopian fantasy novel Uglies. McG, whose recent films all have been for Netflix, has signed on to direct.

The story is set in a world in which a compulsory operation at 16 wipes out physical differences and makes everyone pretty by conforming to an ideal standard of beauty. Sources say King long has been a fan of the series and was aggressive in pursuing the lead role once Netflix acquired rights to the novel.

Krista Vernoff will adapt the script. John Davis and Jordan Davis will produce for Davis Entertainment Company along with Robyn Mesinger for Anonymous Content, Dan Spilo for Industry Entertainment and McG and Mary Viola for their Wonderland banner.

Jamie King and Westerfield will join Joey King as exec producers.

Joey King already has had a big summer after Netflix premiered the sequel to her smash hit romantic comedy, The Kissing Booth, as well as announcing a third film, which already is shot and King returning to star. She is also coming off her Emmy-nominated role of Gypsy in Hulu’s limited series The Act and also will produce series for Hulu after striking a first-look deal with the streaming service. She is the youngest person to strike a deal with a streaming network.

She also signed on to co-star with Brad Pitt in Sony’s Bullet Train.

She is attached to headline and executive produce the limited series, A Spark of Light, by Sony Pictures TV based on the bestselling book by Jodi Piccoult. She also will produce and star in The In Between, written by Marc Klein, for Paramount Players.

This will mark the fourth film McG has directed for the studio having previously helmed The Babysitter, Rim of the World and The Babysitter: Killer Queen.

Vernoff is showrunner and executive producer of ABC’s long-running hit series Grey’s Anatomy, along with its spinoff Station 19, and her new show, Rebel, inspired by the life of Erin Brockovich and starring Katey Sagal, was recently picked up straight to series at ABC.

She is repped by UTA, Coast to Coast Talent Group, Dan Spilo of Industry Entertainment and attorney Howard Fishman. McG is repped by WME, Management 360 and Sloane Offer Weber and Dern. Vernoff is repped by UTA. Westerfield is represented by CAA and Jill Grinberg of Jill Grinberg Literary Management

Kiefer Sutherland, Joey King Set For Shudder Animated ‘The Creepshow Halloween Special’; Based On Stephen King, Joe Hill Stories

Kiefer Sutherland and Joey King will lend their voices to Shudder’s upcoming animated The Creepshow Halloween Special, based on two stories by Stephen King and his author son Joe Hill.

Sutherland (24, Designated Survivor) will star in “Survivor Type,” based on King’s short story adapted by the special’s director Greg Nicotero. Sutherland plays a man determined to stay alive alone on a deserted island no matter what the cost.

The second tale, “Twittering from the Circus of the Dead,” based on the short story by Joe Hill and adapted by Melanie Dale, stars Joey King (The Kissing Booth) as a teen whose family road trip includes a visit to the gravest show on earth.

The Creepshow Halloween Special, based on Shudder’s anthology Creepshow series, with animation by Octopie animation studio, premieres October 26 on Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror and the supernatural.

Halloween wouldn’t be complete without Creepshow,” said Nicotero, “so with the help of the father and son team of Stephen & Joe as well as a fantastic animated format, we get to continue the tradition and spirit of Halloween,

Craig Engler, Shudder’s General Manager, said, “Although season 2, now in production, has been delayed due to Covid, Greg and his team were still able to pull off this fantastic special so everyone will be able to enjoy a little bit of Creepshow during Halloween season.”

The Creepshow Halloween Special is produced by the Cartel with Monster Agency Productions, Octopie, Taurus Entertainment, and Striker Entertainment. Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, and Eric Woods are executive producers and Geoff Silverman and Anthony Fankhauser are co-executive producers for the Cartel. Greg Nicotero and Brian Witten are executive producers and Julia Hobgood is a co-executive producer for Monster Agency Productions. Dave Newberg and Isaac Krauss are Executive Producers for Octopie; Robert Dudelson, James Dudelson and Jordan Kizwani are executive producers for Taurus Entertainment. Russell Binder is executive producer and Marc Mostman co-executive producer for Striker Entertainment.

Movie ‘The Lie’ Will Premiere on Amazon Prime

Yesterday, Blumhouse and Amazon Prime Video announced that eight new genre films will be heading to the streaming service under the “Welcome to Blumhouse” banner. Putting the focus on diverse casts, female voices and emerging filmmakers, the first slate of four films (the second half will arrive in 2021) kicks off with The Lie, written and directed by The Killing creator Veena Sud, which launches on October 6 alongside Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr.‘s Black Box.

Starring Joey King, Peter Sarsgaard, and Mireille Enos, the film follows a family torn to pieces after their teenage daughter (King) confessed to a horrible crime. Desperate to protect their family no matter the cost, the scramble to coverup for their kid while trying to come to terms with what she’s capable of only drives them into darker, more twisted territory.

The role of a teenage psychopath might come as a bit of a surprise to fans who became familiar with King through her effervescent performance in Netflix’s hit rom-com The Kissing Booth franchise (though if you caught Hulu’s The Act, you already know how dark King can get,) but according to Sud, those are the very qualities that made her ideal for the role. “Joey is capable of an immense range – she can go from a sweet rom-com heroine all the way to a troubled, co-dependent, murderous teen in the blink of an eye,” Sud said.

I needed all of that in the character of Kayla, a teenage girl who kills her best friend and seems to have little remorse about it. A real high wire act for any actor but in joey’s hands, it was so authentic, believable. She’s an immense talent and brought so much humanity to this young, troubled girl which I knew Kayla had to have to be the center of this story.”

While Sud is no stranger to tales of crime and punishment after four seasons of her Golden Globe-nominated series The Killing, the feature format offered an opportunity to approach the genre in a new way. “Packing into 90 minutes what I’m used to writing for a 10-13 hour story creates a natural propulsive energy where not one moment is superfluous, not one frame is wasted,” Sud said.

Speaking to the consistent popularity of crime thrillers in entertainment, Sud said, “Murder is an extreme act, one that pushes both the victim, the family, community, the killer to confront the darkest parts of who they really are. In The Lie, the veneer of civilization is slowly peeled away, moment by moment, as Kayla and her family circle the wagons, protect what is theirs. One bad deed leads to another until they are unrecognizable to themselves.”

The Lie also arrives in a world that’s all but recognizable for the time being, with theatrical distributors limping back into business amid the pandemic. But streaming might just be the perfect way to watch The Lie, making the domestic drama and contained thrills feel even more intimate. “The darker, sadder, more uncomfortable truths in this family will strike home – forgive the pun – differently in a movie theater with strangers versus in one’s own living room with family,” Sud said. “The intimacy of this drama is actually perfect for viewing at home, if maybe deeply uncomfortable at moments.

The Lie arrives on Amazon Prime Video October 6, followed by Evil Eye and Nocturne on October 13, and a slate of for more films to follow in 2021.
